Children’s Bill of Rights in Sports
Proud Early Endorser
The Monroe Family YMCA is proud to be an early endorser of the Children’s Bill of Rights in Sports, an initiative developed by the Aspen Institute’s Project Play and supported regionally through Project Play: Southeast Michigan.
At the Y, we believe every child deserves a safe, welcoming place to play, grow and belong. Youth sports are about more than wins and losses. They give kids opportunities to build confidence, develop new skills, make friends, stay active and have fun.
The Children’s Bill of Rights in Sports provides a shared standard for creating positive, safe and meaningful sports experiences for every child.
The Eight Rights
Every child has the right:
- To play sports
- To safe and healthy environments
- To qualified program leaders
- To developmentally appropriate play
- To share in the planning and delivery of their activities
- To an equal opportunity for personal growth
- To be treated with dignity
- To enjoy themselves
Bringing the Rights to Our Programs
As a proud early endorser, we are working to make the Children’s Bill of Rights in Sports part of the youth sports experience at the Monroe Family YMCA.
The rights are reviewed during coach training at the beginning of each season, helping coaches think about how they structure activities, respond to mistakes and give every child a meaningful opportunity to participate.
Information is also shared with parents and players through league packets, and an acknowledgement is included as part of the registration process.
You’ll also see the Children’s Bill of Rights in Sports represented at the Y and on the field, helping keep these shared principles visible throughout our programs.
